Is there a rumor you've heard that you would like to track down? Is there something in the city — like playground equipment or a pothole — that needs to be fixed? Rick Romano answers some of the mysteries of life in Wauwatosa and helps solve everyday problems.

Why yield when I can turn into my own lane?

Issue:"I was wondering why there is a yield sign in the right turn lane from eastbound Watertown Plank Road to southbound Highway 100," our reader asked. "You turn into your own lane there and I wouldn't think we would have to yield since we are not turning into traffic."

Our reader further pointed out that he has seen cars stop completely and cars go around other cars at that intersection.

Status: It's all about safety, said DOT spokesperson Michael Pyritz. He acknowledged that some drivers may find it odd that a yield sign would greet drivers at the intersection, especially since the dedicated intersection lane is further protected by an island.

"Even though you are not moving into traffic, it's standard operating procedure to have a way to slow down traffic," Pyritz said. The traffic from the west into that intersection has just moved past a residential area and into a commercial area. We want to make sure that those who are turning slow down as they move into a road that has a high volume of traffic."
