Wauwatosa doctor's high-tech touch boosts the outlook
Dr. Amanda Reiswig was one of those people.
You know, the ones who always knew what they wanted to do when they grew up.
"The first day of medical school they ask you what you want to do, and I said this. This is actually the reason I went to medical school," said Reiswig, owner of EvolvMD Medspa & Body Contouring.
An interest in lasers drew Reiswig to study bio-engineering as an undergraduate. And, while she briefly considered working on the research and development side of the field, Reiswig decided she was more interested in using bioengineered products, like lasers, than developing them.
So, after medical school, Reiswig did her four-year pathology residency and then spent a year learning about lasers as an intern. She opened EvolvMD last fall.
"Basically, it's just fun," Reiswig said. "It's using cutting-edge devices to change people's lives in a minimally invasive way."
From Botox to laser hair removal, the clinic offers all the services people might typically expect from a body maintenance boutique. But Reiswig also offers laser-focused treatments, like laser liposuction, as well as non-surgical fat reduction, which uses radio waves to heat and destroy stubborn fat cells.
"With all of these different apparatuses, we're trying to make people feel as good about themselves as they possibly can," Reiswig said.
Not that she doesn't find herself explaining, even justifying, her work.
But, she said, "Most people are fairly interested, at least on the surface. They especially want to know prices. And I think people are surprised. They actually don't know that there are lasers that can remove age spots or treat rosacea and that you can do things about lines beyond Botox and a facelift."
People are also surprised about her clientele.
"We have a lot of clients who are in a sales-driven industry, who feel they need to compete with younger co-workers, or they're looking to make a change and are concerned their age might be a deficit, or they've been dealing with acne scars their whole life and they've just decided to do something about it.
"Our youngest client is 12. But we see people interested in preventive care starting in their 20s; we do a lot of preventive Botox in mid-20s (patients). And we have patients into their 80s who are just trying to resurface their skin and replenish."
Many aren't even looking for a major transformation.
"They just want to look like a better version of themselves," Reiswig said.
Which is why she often asks patients, particularly those seeking injectables to address anti-aging, to bring in a picture of their best face from five years ago.
It's part of the reason she loves her work.
"It's just a pleasure to be able, when people are spending money and saving up for these types of services, to help them reach their goals."
