Wauwatosa In Our Schools: April 14

Christ King

Crist King will host VIP Day from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, April 21. Students can invite special people in their lives to attend all-school Mass, followed by classroom visits and refreshments in North Hall.

Detention Center

Milwaukee County Accountability Program students are supporting April's Child Abuse Prevention Month with the theme Building Community, Building Hope. They are displaying cooperative learning skills as they read "Forged By Fire," a Coretta Scott King award-winning book by Sharon M. Draper. Students also will be making informational posters promoting awareness of the impacts of child abuse.

Students in Health analyzed clues as they learned how scientists recently discovered how several famous historical figures died. Using science, history, and detective work students found how scientists discovered the real reason why Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Beethoven died.

East

East HS students Jenna Moerchen and Rebekah Przybl will attend the HOSA State Competition. HOSA is an organiztion of future health professionals. They are competing in Medical Terminology, Health Career Display, and Nursing Assisting.

The Tosa East APPSE team is in its final stages of preparation for the We the People National Competition hosted by the University of Maryland from April 23-24. The Acting and Tech classes at East will be performing Shakespeare's The Tempest at 7 p.m. May 16 and 17 at Hart Park Rotary Pavilion.

The annual art show is May 18. Student work will be up all day, with an opening reception at 6:30 p.m. AP art work will be available for purchase with 100 percent of the profits going to the students.

Tosa East's forensics team competed at the WFCA State Tournament on Saturday and earned second place in Division 2. Seventy-five schools from across the state competed in the tournament. Twelve members of the East team advanced to either semi-finals or finals. Those who advanced to the finals finished in the top six for their categories in the state.

Eisenhower

In math, fourth-graders are learning to solve word problems that involve multiplying whole numbers and fractions. In literacy, students are examining the characteristics of primary and secondary text sources.

Jefferson

The fourth- and fifth-grade orchestra students have been working hard to learn five pieces of music with lots of new notes and rhythms. After a great deal of rehearsal they performed at the 35th annual All City String Festival on March 20. The grand finale, "Ode to Joy," was performed by all the orchestra students together — fourth-grade through seniors in high school, throughout the district. Over 1,000 Wauwatosa orchestra students participated.

Lincoln

It's award season at the Lincoln Library. In March, students got the chance to cast a vote for the Golden Archer Award. The Golden Archer award is a book award unique to Wisconsin. Students from all over the state vote for their favorite picture book out of a choice of 5. We are still waiting for statewide results, but winning by a landslide at Lincoln was The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak. Later in April, students will be learning about poetry to celebrate the 20th anniversary of National Poetry Month.

Longfellow

Over 50 French and German students from Longfellow and Whitman will be heading to Concordia Language Villages April 14-17 for an immersion weekend. The students will gain a deeper perspective of the world through activities and sports, games, arts and crafts, singing and dancing, authentic meals and conversation with fluent French and German speakers.

Madison

First-graders are learning about insects, mammals, birds and reptiles in science. They will study their characteristics and how they survive in their habitats.

McKinley

In second-grade science, students are studying earth systems and learning about tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, and earthquakes. They have been doing fun labs like making a tornado and hurricane model with plastic bottles and water, and using Jell-O to demonstrate what the earth's crust looks like during an earthquake. Students will also construct a homemade volcano.

Our Redeemer Lutheran

Eighty percent of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Forensics Team qualified for the state forensics meet held at Neenah High School on Saturday, April 9. Nathan Wessel took first place in the state for the Informational category. Other qualifiers who competed representing ORLS were Rebeccaa Gatewood, Rob Hurst, Carlito Johnson, Emma Johnson, Janelle Johnson, Robert Julga, Trevor Julga, Hoyt Leitzke, Samantha Reiser, Clara Strelow, Ilsa Strelow, and Lydia Zajichek.

Pilgrim Lutheran

Forward testing will take place for grades three through eight from Monday, April 11, through Friday, April 22.

Roosevelt

In second grade, Roosevelt children are working on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. They are also learning about measurements including measuring lengths, capacity, area, perimeter, and weight. In reading, the children are reading non-fiction texts and writing summaries about what they learned. Roosevelt third-graders are celebrating National Poetry Month by learning about figurative language and incorporating it into their own poetry. In math, students are wrapping up the geometry unit. Inquiry remains the focus in social studies and science. Students are using a variety of sources to answer questions they may have on topics we are learning about in class.

Underwood

Underwood students and staff recently celebrated PBIS success with their second trimester celebration theme of Tropical Vacation Celebration. On this day all dressed in summer and vacation clothing and listened to beach music during lunch.

Wauwatosa Catholic

WCS second-graders have been working with clay in their art class. They fashioned a cross — and were able to put it in the kiln. They then glazed it. The students learned the process which artists working with clay use to produce their works. Their creations will become part of their first communion celebration.

Wauwatosa Montessori

Children's House students worked on number lines, read books about Zen, talked about meditation and enjoyed the in-house Zoo field trip. Lower Elementary students worked on their Aztec, Inca and Maya presentations. Upper Elementary students discussed the primary election process, researched the presidential candidates for each party and had a secret ballot with their choice. Adolescent Program students worked on student-choice research projects and computer coding.

Whitman

Whitman Middle School will be hosting its annual Knowledge-a-thon on Friday, April 15h. This wonderful all school activity places students in teams as they compete to see which group can answer all 100 questions correctly. These questions are developed by the teaching staff at Whitman and are all related to the content that has been taught throughout the year. Students are encourage to ask people to sponsor their team, either by giving a per correct answer donation, or a one time pledge. The Whitman School Community has raised over $14,000 during the last two years. Thanks to everyone for your continued support of our students!

Wilson/STEM

Spanish students at Wilson/WSTEM are completing unit four, which focuses on healthy living. Students in first through fifth grade are exploring vocabulary about nutrition, exercise, and positive choices. In addition, students are learning cultural aspects of healthy lifestyles in Spanish speaking countries. The older students are taking what they've learned, doing additional research, and incorporating it into classroom presentations for their peers.
