Wauwatosa In Our Schools: May 19

East High

Last week, 10th-graders saw a matinee performance of the play "Fences." There was a talk-back with some of the actors afterwards — one of the actors was in a few episodes of the TV show "Empire." It was an excellent performance. On Thursday, May 19, 59 seniors will be honored at the Scholarship and Athletic Awards Program.

Eisenhower Elementary

Fifth-graders are working on building community as a grade level. They created team-building games that focused around the attributes of engagement and respect. Some of the activities they participated in were building marshmallow towers and playing a numbers game.

Jefferson Elementary

Staff member Kathy Meinecke had the opportunity of going to Camp Whitcomb with the fifth-graders last week. The students had an amazing time fishing and canoeing on Lake Keesus. They participated in a water chemistry class, put on waders and examined the lake water for insects, and explored the swamp. They topped off their night with a night hike and a campfire.

Lincoln Elementary

Senior kindergarten students will participate in Diorama Day on Friday, May 20. Each kindergarten student will create and share a diorama featuring the characters and setting of their favorite children's book. Dioramas will be on display in the classrooms from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. for families to view. Students also will also view of the dioramas, and record the characters and settings.

Longfellow Elementary

Students are applying their knowledge of marketing to create and promote a new flavor of Ben and Jerry's ice cream.

Madison Elementary

Madison Elementary School students presented "Libro Detectivo" at the May 9 school board meeting. Fourth- and fifth-grade students, who have been involved in the Spanish program since its inception five years ago, shared their knowledge of the Spanish language and how it connects to our literacy program. Madison students are in first place in the district for "Libro Detectivo" reading minutes, and completing graphic organizers for the program.

McKinley Elementary

With the beautiful weather approaching, the fourth- and fifth-grade physical education students will be outside participating in relay races. This will help them prepare for the challenges of field day. McKinley first-graders will be working on a poetry unit during grade-level switches. They will incorporate poems into technology block by typing them and adding graphics.

Our Redeemer Lutheran

Our Redeemer is offering a Mad Science Brixology Camp this summer from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 20-24 for 7-12 year olds at the school. Visit the website at Milwaukee.madscience.org to register; call (414) 858-9990 with questions.

Roosevelt Elementary

Isabelle Schroeder won a first place at Principal Financial for her sheep painting. Vida Hutchinson and Bruno Gilkay both placed second for their historical building artworks at the Wauwatosa Historical Society. Finley Wall's concentric-shape painting was chosen to be purchased by the Wauwatosa School Board.

St. Joseph Catholic

St. Joseph Catholic School has announced that it will be offering full-day K4 beginning in fall 2016. Parents will have the option of enrolling students in either a half-day or full-day program.

Underwood Elementary

On Thursday, May 5, Underwood celebrated Family Fun Night. Students attended with their families and enjoyed pizza, followed by navigating their way to various reading and math stations with their "passport to learning." Both adults and children learned new math and reading games that they can play at home to strengthen their reading and math Skills. Each student brought home a "goodie bag" that included a writing notebook, bookmarks and tips for parents to help their children during the summer.

Washington Elementary

Throughout the school year, fifth-grade students have been participating in classroom activities and lessons to complete their academic and career planning e-portfolios. During the months of April and May students have been presenting their portfolios to their parents in an individual conference with support from the school social worker. The e-portfolios and conferences assist students in planning, monitoring and managing their own learning, personal/social lives and career development as well transition to middle school.

Wauwatosa Catholic

On Wednesday, May 18, the school held its fifth annual Fine Arts Night. Third-graders presented a Living Wax Museum. The fourth-graders staged an artist gala and embodied the spirit of famous artists. Fifth-graders presented their IB Primary Years Progamme Exhibition. They each chose a project that answered the question "What can you do to better share the planet?"

Wauwatosa Montessori

The Children's House classrooms have added butterflies to the environments. Yoga for the K-5 students has been a terrific reminder of our mindfulness practices. The lower elementary students have begun research about multiple cultures. Lower students also finished their MAPS testing this past week. The upper elementary students worked to weed and turn over the raised garden beds at Montessori. The adolescents had an amazing trip to Door County this week; the trip provided many opportunities for the students to grow as a community as well as experience some of the natural beauty of Door County.

West High

On May 17, the art department was to display the work of this year's art students. The exhibit showcased works in multiple media, including photography and digital art, drawing and painting, sculpture and clay, and mixed media. In the Steiner Center the "AP Movie" was to be shown. This video was produced by students in the AP art courses to highlight their current portfolios. In the library, the art show reception was to begin for all other students and families. The exhibit will be up through May 23.

Whitman

Olivia Starich and Mark Schaefer were recognized by the Rotary Club of Wauwatosa for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and in the community. Both students were recognized at the Students Awards Luncheon at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Wilson/WSTEM

WSTEM fourth- and fifth-grade students worked with specialists from the 3-D Molecular Modeling Center at Milwaukee School of Engineering to discover the structure of salt molecules and create a 26-person representation of a neuron sending messages in the brain.
