Is there a rumor you've heard that you would like to track down? Is there something in the city — like playground equipment or a pothole — that needs to be fixed? Rick Romano answers some of the mysteries of life in Wauwatosa and helps solve everyday problems.

Why is Tosa's ZIP Code 53226 linked to Milwaukee?

Issue: A reader asked that question and wondered why what is clearly is a Wauwatosa ZIP Code does not have the local municipality associated with it.

Status: The simple answer is that Milwaukee is the ZIP Code name for all municipalities in Milwaukee County.

"It really doesn't affect the delivery," said Leon Van Vooren, the local customer relations coordinator for the U.S. Postal Service. He said this has been the practice throughout his 27-year career with the Postal Service.

Sean Hargadon, a Postal Service media spokesperson for Wisconsin, said it's all about where the mail is processed, not where it is delivered.

"All the mail that comes into Milwaukee County communities is processed through Milwaukee," Hargadon said.

Hargadon shared a lengthy Postal Service statement that further explained that this nationwide approach to ZIP Codes is meant to speed delivery. Any change in that approach would be costly, the statement said.
