Wauwatosa East Sports Wrapups: Oct. 16, 2014
EAST TENNIS
Wauwatosa East scored two points and finished tied for sixth out of nine teams at the Wauwatosa West Subsectional on Oct. 6.
Seble Yigletu at No. 4 singles and Nina Kortas at No. 1 singles were the only players that won a match at sub-sectionals.
Yigletu won her match against Menomonee Falls and then lost to Cedarburg. Kortas won her first match against Wisconsin Lutheran and then lost to Cedarburg. No one qualified to Sectionals.
Cedarburg (22 points), Homestead (18), Germantown (14), Tosa West (12) and Pius XI (6) finished ahead of the Red Raiders and Menomonee Falls, each with two points.
EAST GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Tosa East was swept, 3-0, (25-15, 25-9, 25-10) on Oct. 7 at Brookfield East to start the week.
Stat leaders were Molly Devine (8 digs), Margo Lipscomb (5 assists), Lizzy Mizer (3 kills) and Cora Bilitz (2 blocks).
"We played very well against a super team," coach Gary Tome said. "We competed every point and were focused and intense throughout the entire match. I was very proud of our effort."
"Lizzie Mizer had a real breakthrough match offensively for us leading the team in kills and hitting percentage and she carried this into our tourney at Brookfield East on Saturday.
"Margo Lipscomb was solid throughout setting a nice tourney and continuing her consistent play. She has really taken over running our offense and has become a court leader for us.
"On the defensive side, Molly Devine led the team in passing percentage and digs at Libero while Joanna Taylor controlled the net, leading us in blocks."
The Red Raiders had to shuffle their lineup, as they were without their starting middle and outside hitters.
"The subs played hard, but our inexperience showed against some solid veteran competition," Tome said."
EAST SWIM
The Tosa East girls lost a thriller, 95-91, to Divine Savior Holy Angels on Oct. 9 at home.
The Red Raiders won five events and finished second in five.
"These two teams match up very well against each other," coach Russ Wiegel said. "It came down to the last 25 of the last event. We knew we were the underdog coming in and it would be close. They gave a valiant effort and it showed with numerous best times."
The 200 medley relay (1:59,89) behind sophomore Michaela Lonski, junior Celia Ripple, senior Maura Haydin and junior Elizabeth Tuffnell.
Ripple was a double winner, winning both the 200 IM (2:20.97) and the 500 freestyle (5:38.54).
Haydin took first in the 100 butterfly (1:07.73) and freshman Elizabeth Peura captured the 100 breaststroke (1:15.27) and was second in the 200 free (2:10.46).
Tuffnell was second in the 100 free (1:00.66) as did sophomore Madeline Ladd in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.22).
The 200 free relay took second (1:51.12) behind Tuffnell, Peura, Haydin and Ripple and as did the 400 free relay (4:10.33) behind senior Hannah Bartholf, sophomore Madeleine Jamieson, Ladd, and Peura.
EAST GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
The Red Raiders finished 7th out of 13 teams at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational on Oct. 10 at McCarty Park.
East scored 177 points while Wisconsin Lutheran won the event with 58 points, 10 more than second place Divine Savior Holy Angels.
Senior Lindsey Govan had an impressive 6th place finish in school record time and personal best 19 minutes, 44 seconds to lead East. She is now 10th on school's all-time list.
Three sophomores Jordyn Summerfield, Kacy Fischer and Janet Fee finished 33rd (PR, 20:58), 38th (21:07) and 42nd (PR, 21:16), respectively.
Senior Tayla Ederesinghe was 58th (21:46), rounding out the top five. Junior Kayla Klein also participated, taking 63rd (PR 21:55).
EAST BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Tosa East finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational on Oct. 10 at McCarty Park.
The host Vikings took first with 25 points, well ahead of Marquette (83), Baraboo (113) and the Red Raiders.
Both the varsity and junior varsity executed race plans and as a result they saw huge drops in their times.
Junior Sam Potter finished third (16:23) behind seniors Kyler Lueck (15:59) and Eric Brown (16:15), both of Wisconsin Lutheran.
Finishing 15th was senior Tyler Klein (PR, 16:45) and 21st was senior Noah Froh (PR, 16:57). This was the first time Froh made it into the 16s.
Rounding out the top five were senior Pierce Libbey (41st, 17:24) and freshman Christopher Simons (51st, PR, 17:35).
Libbey has been out of action for six weeks and Simons is now the fourth fastest freshman in school history with a few more races to go.
Two other runners taking part were junior Tony Busalacchi (64th, 17:55) and junior Paul Gagne (70th, 18:01).
"On a week with a lot of distractions the boys turned in great performances across the board," Laska said. "Race condition could not have been more perfect.
"We had 17 runners with personal record performances and many of those were 20 seconds or more" faster.
EAST FOOTBALL
Tosa East dropped a 42-14 decision to an improving West Allis Hale team, as the Red Raiders played one of their poorest games of the season on Oct. 10 on Homecoming at Hart Park.
"We didn't play well in all facets of the game," coach Mike Richards said. "We got nothing going, really. And when we tried we'd get a costly turnover. But at the same time, give credit to Hale."
Running back Joe Werner and quarterback Trevor Williamson scored the first two touchdowns — an 8-yard run with 4 minutes, 16 seconds in the first quarter and a 4-yard run with 9:20 in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Junior wide receiver Cade McGown got the Red Raiders on the board when he grabbed a Jackson Telderer pass and raced 49 yards for a touchdown at the 7:26 mark to cut the lead to 14-7.
But the Huskies put the game away with touchdown runs of 2 yards and 14 yards by quarterback Joe Jo Breznik and wide receiver Jeff Schubert, respectively, for a 28-7 halftime lead.
Early in the third quarter, a familiar combination did it again, as Telderer connected with junior wide receiver Ryan Kelnhofer for a 65 yards score.
But Hale added two scores and the game was over before the fourth quarter arrived.
Telderer completed 13 of 38 with 218 yards as the running game struggled with 30 yards rushing. Kelnhofer had 86 yards receiving and McGown added 79.
Richards credited senior outside linebacker Grant Mize and middle linebacker Ryan Sattler with good play.
Richards also was pleased with the support from the Red Raiders fans at their homecoming game.
"It was a great crowd," he said. "I want to thank our crowd. It was Homecoming and we're thankful for the fans and their support."
