Wauwatosa Alumni Basketball Champions crowned
Recreation department has 3 divisions this year
The 67th annual Recreation Department Alumni Basketball Tournament came to a close with three games Friday, Dec. 27, at Wauwatosa West High School.
This was the first year the Recreation Department expanded the Alumni Tournament to three divisions. The Greenwill Division is named after Thomas Greenwill, the Cartier Division is named after Warren Cartier and the Beattie Division is named after Rick Beattie.
The Greenwill Division, featured teams from 1965-1988, with the 1986/87 Wauwatosa East team winning their third alumni tournament title by beating the 1985 Wauwatosa East squad 70-40.
Tony Smith led 1986/87 East with 19 points. Other members of the team were David Dietzler, Dan Leffler, Dave Korpela, Chris Leffler, Dan Hodges, Jack Golatke and Scott Rise.
The Cartier Division featured teams from 1989-2000. The 1999/2000 Wauwatosa East team won their first Alumni title by defeating the 1996/97 Wauwatosa West in a thriller, 41-35.
Leonard Biddle led 1999/2000 East with 10 points. Other members of the team were Robert Dubinski, Jeff Worzella, Marcellus Dawson, Mike Blazejorsky, Robere Johnson, Lloyd Willson and Dannie Simpson.
The Beattie Division showcased teams from 2001-2014. The championship went to the 2002 Wauwatosa East team, which got hot early and was able to maintain their lead in a 48-35 win over 2008/09 Wauwatosa East.
For the 2002 East team, it was their seventh Alumni Tournament Championship, with their first coming in 2006.
Leading scorer for 2002 East was Andy Freund with 13 points. Other members of the team were Aaron Bielowski, Ryan Fitzgerald, Steve Mathie, Winston Roberts, Peter Gerhardt, Tad Balsiger, Ben Juech and Chris Braier.
