The Wauwatosa West girls track and field team beat New Berlin West by 15 points on March 31 at New Berlin West to win the Woodland Conference Indoor Championship.

The Trojans scored 135 points to the Vikings' 120, while the next-closest score was third-place New Berlin Eisenhower with 65 points.

The Trojans stood out in several events.

First of all, they swept the top three spots in the 55-meter dash behind CheriA Adams (7.37 seconds), Azya McLin (7.45) and Mercy Ndon (7.61).

Brianna Horton won the 55 hurdles (9.85), and Demyrah Thomas finished third (10.02).

Tosa West took first, second and fifth in the 200 dash behind Adams (28.36), McLin (29.09) and Ndon (29.76).

The 4x160 relay finished first in 1 minute, 32.50 seconds behind McLin, Horton, Ndon and Kayla Crump.

Tosa West also went 1-2 in the triple jump behind Adams (34 feet-81/2 inches) and Tessa Mallegni (32-13/4).

Alexis Hardy had an "awesome throw" to win the shot put (36-11/2). Caroline Morris finished fifth with a throw of 29-61/2.

Anna Roghan is back in action and finished third in the 1,600 run (5:48.35).

"She runs an awesome race," coach Jack LoPresti said. "This is her first race of the year coming off an injury."

Roghan then came back later to take third in the 3,200 (12:58.64).

"What a super gutsy race," LoPresti said. "She just does an awesome job. She competes very hard and outsprints a Pewaukee gal for third; an excellent race."

West's Breanna Weigman jumped 5 feet, 2 inches to take second place in the high jump.

"That is an excellent jump, for anyone, not to mention a freshman," LoPresti said. "That puts her in rare air, one of the top frosh jumpers we have had around here. Grace Shelstad (her coach) is doing an excellent job with her."

Horton was fourth in the long jump (14-31/2).

LoPresti also had praise for Mallegni and Eliza Soczka.

"In the 400, Tessa (1:10.62) and Eliza (1:12.24) ran some gutsy races," he said. "And with absolutely no recovery, Eliza runs a tough 800 (3:02.27) and just misses scoring.

"Tessa also had great performances in the triple and long jump (13-33/4)."

Case Classic

West finished fourth (55) at the Case Classic at UW-Parkside on April 4 behind first-place Oak Creek (79).

McLin (7.35) and Ndon (7.62) finished 1-2 in the 55 dash; Adams was first in the 200 (27.57); and Horton was third in the 55 hurdles (9.90) and fourth in the long jump (14-11).

West is off until the Wisconsin Lutheran Invite on Saturday, April 25.
