Transplant Hepatologist Dr. Thomas Faust Joins Transplant Center at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin

Thomas Faust, MD, MBE, has been appointed professor of medicine (gastroenterology and hepatology) and surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He will also serve as director of hepatology and the medical director of adult liver transplantation for the Transplant Center, a joint program of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, BloodCenter of Wisconsin, and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Board certified in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology, Dr. Faust specializes in management of patients with acute and chronic liver diseases, as well as patients who have undergone liver transplantation. His research interests include use of bio-artificial liver support devices, treatments for patients with viral hepatitis and autoimmune liver diseases, management of acute liver failure, and bioethical implications of liver transplantation.

He has played an integral role at multiple transplant centers in establishing policy and procedure for the management of deceased and living donor transplantation, donation after cardiac death and extended criteria organ donation. He has also addressed the ethics of organ allocation at local, national and international levels.

Most recently, Dr. Faust served as director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited gastroenterology and liver transplant fellowship programs at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is also an attending physician, and co-director of the ethics curriculum.

Prior to joining the MCW faculty, Dr. Faust completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and a fellowship in hepatology and liver transplantation at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. He received his medical degree at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, followed by a residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn.

He has published dozens of papers, editorials and book chapters in peer-reviewed publications and is a prolific lecturer and teacher.

Dr. Faust’s appointment is effective October 1, 2013.
