Eddee Daniel Solo Show Unitarian Universalist Church West Art Gallery

The UUCW Community Room Art Gallery is hosting a new photography exhibit through May 8. The show features the work of Eddee Daniel, a fine art photographer and writer specializing in a contemporary, urban experience of nature. Eddee is a long-time member of UUCW, where he has served in a variety of leadership positions. He has over 30 years of experience teaching art and photography and has an extensive exhibition record.

Eddee's practice examines how we perceive and construct understandings of nature in the contexts of culture and the built environment. His work is conceptually framed by the paradoxical term Urban Wilderness, which symbolizes the complexity of his oeuvre as well as the themes and tensions inherent in the concept.

Eddee began working with the Urban Wilderness concept in the 1990s for a documentary project that culminated in his first book, entitled Urban Wilderness: Exploring a Metropolitan Watershed, published in 2008 by the Center for American Places at Columbia College Chicago. Members at UUCW can find this book in our church library!

During the process of creating Urban Wilderness, Eddee began to see the potential for more expressive, abstract, and conceptual approaches to its themes. He has since produced several related bodies of work using a variety of techniques and formal approaches. The Urban Wilderness Project received the Kodak American Greenways Award from the Conservation Fund. Other awards include the Wustum Museum of Art, Concordia Center for Environmental Studies, Savannah College of Art and Design, The Photographic Society of America, Upstream People Gallery, Company Magazine, and New Mexico Photographer, among others. Examples of these bodies of work are included in this exhibit.

Eddee currently serves as Artist in Residence in the Menomonee Valley. This position is co-sponsored by Menomonee Valley Partners and Zimmerman Architectural Studios. The Eddee Daniel Solo Show can be viewed between and after worship services on Sundays or by special appointment. UUCW is located on the eastern edge of Brookfield at 13001 W. North Ave, minutes west of the North Avenue exit on Highway 45.
